The UK government has submitted an update to its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), reaffirming its commitment to the global energy transition. This latest Information to facilitate Clarity, Transparency and Understanding (ICTU) outlines the policies and initiatives the UK is implementing to meet its Paris Agreement commitments, including lifting the onshore wind ban, expanding solar capacity, and delivering a record-breaking renewables auction.

Importantly, the update also acknowledges consultation with non-state actors, including input from the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA). This recognition highlights the growing influence of GRA’s Now Deliver Change campaign and the Mission 2025 initiative, which call for governments to set ambitious, specific, and actionable renewable energy targets in their NDCs.

Louise Burrows, Head of Government Affairs at GRA, welcomed the UK’s climate plan update: “The UK has reaffirmed its leadership in the global energy transition, demonstrating a clear commitment to meeting international climate goals. With this ambitious climate plan, the UK is setting an example, providing the certainty needed to unlock private investment in renewables. By harnessing the energy security, cost competitiveness, and rapid deployment benefits of renewables, the UK is not only advancing its own clean energy future but also encouraging other governments to make similarly bold commitments to accelerate the global renewables revolution.”

The UK has also announced an upcoming cross-economy plan to meet its climate targets, which will contain sector-wide policy packages aimed at achieving net zero by 2050.

As the world moves towards tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, the 191 governments yet to submit their NDCs must follow suit. The GRA urges more companies and organisations to join the call on governments to seize the opportunity to set ambitious, specific, and actionable renewable energy targets in their NDCs.
