Report from the Global Renewables Alliance outlines how regulatory changes in key markets could secure 24/7 clean power access for Asia-Pacific’s fastest-growing economies.
Brussels, June 11, 2025 – The Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) has launched a new report outlining the steps needed for companies and governments to secure reliable and affordable renewable energy in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. As APAC accounts for nearly 60% of global power demand growth over the next two decades, regulatory reforms could unlock unprecedented access to round-the-clock clean energy.
The report highlights five key APAC markets – South Korea, India, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam – and identifies pathways to scale 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) procurement. It calls for enhanced grid flexibility, increased storage, streamlined permitting, and market mechanisms that allow real-time clean energy matching.
“The APAC region is the engine of global growth, but its success, security and sustainability depends on access to clean, reliable, and cost-effective energy,” said Bruce Douglas, CEO of the Global Renewables Alliance. “Achieving 24/7 carbon-free energy in APAC is about building the renewables, grids and storage that businesses are demanding. Our report shows that with the right policies and corporate commitments, real progress is within reach.”
The report outlines three strategic pillars:
“The first step for regulators across Asia Pacific is to improve electricity data transparency and access, which will enable hourly renewable energy certificates,” said Ali Izadi, Head of Asia Pacific at BloombergNEF. “They should also ensure power market designs support a wide range of cost-effective, high-impact CFE procurement options. Innovative auction designs can accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and storage technologies, while grid planning and regulations must align with cost-effective power system decarbonization.”
