The Northeast Consortium, which legally, politically, and economically unites the nine states of the region, has signed a joint declaration with the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) in support of the global 3x Renewables target – an initiative that aims to triple installed renewable power generation capacity, including solar PV, wind and hydro by 2030.

The signing took place in Fortaleza (Ceará) during a meeting with climate leaders, government authorities, and energy experts to discuss energy transition and climate justice, as well as align regional priorities for COP30 in Belém.

The Global Renewables Alliance was represented by Natália Oliveira, Regional Lead for Latin America, who highlighted the region’s leadership and the importance of integrating public policies with technological innovation.

“The Northeast shows the world how smart grids, storage, and clean energy technologies can turn renewable potential into prosperity. This commitment links the global target of tripling renewables (3xRE) to the creation of skilled jobs and energy security, reinforcing the leadership Brazil can bring on the road to COP30,” she stated.

The commitment by the Northeast Consortium carries particular weight as it follows the outcomes of COP28 in Dubai, where the 3xRE target was established as a global priority. Furthermore, the region’s decision to embed this objective within its political, economic, and environmental agenda reinforces its leadership role in the energy transition, as underlined by the president of the Northeast Consortium and governor of Piauí, Rafael Fonteles.

“As Brazil’s largest generator of renewable energy, the Northeast supports and is determined to deliver on this goal. Given the progress and focus of our projects, this target is already within reach. The challenge now is to expand transmission infrastructure to consolidate this potential into green industry and development,” he said.

This initiative not only strengthens Brazil’s position in international discussions but also highlights the strategic role of developing regions in building economic prosperity aligned with climate sustainability. For the GRA, the signing reflects the growing regional leadership in Brazil and marks an important step toward the priorities that will be at the center of COP30.
