Brazil has appointed veteran climate diplomat André Corrêa do Lago as president of COP30. Since 2023, Corrêa do Lago has served as Brazil’s Secretary of Climate, Energy and Environment and has been working in sustainable development for the past two decades.
“I believe that Brazil can play an incredible role in this COP. The governments, with civil society, the private sector and all stakeholders are absolutely essential in shaping what Brazil wants from this COP,” said Corrêa do Lago in an interview with Globo [translated].
The appointment of Corrêa do Lago, and his vocal support of the Paris Agreement, injects hope into the climate negotiations. The renewables industries will collaborate closely with the COP30 presidency to ensure the negotiations deliver action on the global target to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 and support countries in meeting their commitments.
“I had the pleasure of meeting André Corrêa do Lago at COP29, and would like to congratulate him on his appointment. His leadership and dedication to climate action are truly inspiring. With Corrêa do Lago at the helm of COP30, we have a unique opportunity to accelerate the global renewable energy transition and turn the global ambition into national plans and local projects,” said Bruce Douglas, CEO of the GRA.
“I extend my congratulations to André Corrêa do Lago for his appointment as COP30 President and Ana Toni as COP30 CEO. I look forward to working with them both to deliver on the enormous opportunity the world has at this year’s COP. Brazil can provide the climate leadership needed to accelerate the energy transition and turn the tripling ambition into transformative action in every region of the world,” said Ben Backwell, Chair of the Global Renewables Alliance and CEO of the Global Wind Energy Council.
At COP30, all UN member states will present their updated national climate plans – NDCs. The GRA, with support from over 200 organisations worldwide, call on governments to set ambitious, specific and actionable renewable energy targets in these plans to deliver on the global #3xRenewables target.
