COP29 Blue Zone, Area E, C11/C9

This COP29 event will focus on the vital role that fair trade and trade-friendly policies will play in delivering the goal of tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030. The session will emphasize the need to overcome trade barriers and supply chain bottlenecks in the renewables industry, underscoring how trade policies can encourage the growth and innovation of the renewable energy sector in pursuit of the global renewable energy goals. Emphasis will be placed on the concrete actions that governments and industry can take to facilitate and safeguard trade in renewable energy technologies, as well as the importance of ensuring fair and equitable access to these technologies for emerging markets and developing economies.

The panel discussion brings together leading voices from government, international organisations and industry to jointly define priorities for accelerating global clean energy expansion through trade. Building upon the global tripling renewable goals defined at COP28, high-level roundtables at the Global Renewables Summit in New York in September 2024, and deepening conversations between the Global Renewables Alliance and the WTO Secretariat, this event seeks to identify key priorities of action on renewable energy and trade, so that the latter can help inform decision-making processes in 2025, including in preparation for G20 and COP30. The discussion will focus on practical steps that government, industry and international organisations can take to foster a trade environment that enables a secure, affordable and clean energy transition worldwide.
