The undersigned industry stakeholders Call for a EU Framework to enable the deployment of Long-Duration Energy Storage.

_____________

Europe’s energy system is undergoing a profound transformation. Rapid growth in renewable electricity, accelerating industrial electrification, and rising demand from digital infrastructure are reshaping how power systems operate. While renewable generation continues to expand, periods of low wind and solar output, grid congestion, and increasing curtailment reveal structural flexibility gaps that short-duration solutions alone cannot address.

Ensuring energy security, system reliability, and cost-efficient decarbonisation therefore requires solutions capable of delivering firm, clean power over extended periods. Long-duration energy storage (LDES) plays a central role in addressing these challenges.

By enabling energy to be stored and released over multiple hours and days, LDES allows renewable electricity to be shifted in time and delivered when it is most needed. In high-renewables power systems, LDES supports security of supply, reduces reliance on fossil backup capacity, limits curtailment, and helps contain grid and system costs.

LDES is also increasingly relevant for industry and data-intensive sectors, which require reliable, predictable, and clean power to support electrification and decarbonisation.

The joint statement calls on EU institutions, national governments, regulators, and system operators to:

  • integrate long-duration energy storage into energy system planning and adequacy assessments;
  • ensure fair and cost-reflective treatment in markets, grid charges, and taxation;
  • align capacity mechanisms with long-duration system needs;
  • enable investment and long-term contracting frameworks that support deployment at scale.
