Global 3xRenewables target

The global target to triple renewables by 2030 was set at COP28. Now, we track the progress.

Double Down, Triple Up

GRA’s campaign ‘Double Down, Triple Up’ was launched in 2023 to unite the private sector in support for setting a global target at COP28 to triple renewables and double energy efficiency by 2030. Over 300 organisations joined the campaign which played an instrumental role in supporting the efforts to secure the target.

With the target agreed, GRA continues and expands our collaboration with the COP Presidencies, the International Renewable Energy Agency and many others to ensure that the ambitious target translates into national action and local projects.

Tracking progress

Despite unprecedented growth, the global effort to triple renewable energy by 2030 is falling short. The latest tracking report reveals a significant gap in progress, highlighting the need for an annual investment of $1.5 trillion to meet the UAE Consensus energy goals and keep the 1.5°C target within reach.

See more in the report, developed by the International Renewable Energy Agency, in partnership with the Global Renewables Alliance and the Presidencies of COP28 UAE, COP29 Azerbaijan and COP30 Brazil.

Why we need a target

Together with COP28 and IRENA, GRA developed a report ahead of COP28 outlining where the energy transition was at – and what action was needed to ensure the direction and accelerate the speed.

The report ‘Tripling Renewable Power and Doubling Energy Efficiency by 2030: Crucial Steps Towards 1.5°C’ outlines that the world can reroute onto the 1.5°C pathway if we double energy efficiency and triple renewables globally by the end of this decade.

The report laid a solid foundation for the global target agreed at COP28 and continues to inform action to realise this target.
