Latest news from G20: The United Kingdom and Brazil launch the Global Clean Power Alliance, in a major boost for the world’s clean energy transition.
Brussels, 20 November 2024: Australia, Barbados, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, Morocco, Norway, Tanzania, and the African Union are the first countries to sign up. The United States and the European Union will also partner.
H.E. Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero of the United Kingdom, underscores: “Speeding up the global clean energy transition is in Britain’s national interest – it is the route to the jobs of the future, energy security and tackling the climate crisis.
The UK is back in the business of climate leadership and that means working more closely with other countries to get off the fossil fuel rollercoaster and unlock the rewards of cheap, secure and clean power at home and abroad.”
Louise Burrows, Head of Government Affairs, Global Renewables Alliance (GRA), expresses GRA’s position:
“The launch of the Global Clean Power Alliance (GCPA) at the G20 is a pivotal step towards turbocharging renewable energy investment in emerging and developing markets. We are proud to support the finance mission.
To succeed, the GCPA must now set a clear mandate – whether mobilizing a target of transformational-scale finance or delivering a substantial GW pipeline of renewables – and integrate this within a broader strategy to fully transition the power sector away from fossil fuels.
As we face increasing geopolitical uncertainties, coordination across similar initiatives is more important than ever. We cannot afford fragmented efforts; the GCPA must be the force that unifies and amplifies global action on finance, delivering concrete progress where it is needed most.
We look forward to working with the UK and Brazil on delivering this mission.”
